Could a Plant Compound Assist Protect Your Spine Discs?
If you've ever struggled with disc-related back pain or neck pain, you understand firsthand how important healthy spinal discs are to getting through your day through your day. Now, encouraging new research is exploring a plant-based compound called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to delay disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already well-regarded for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory characteristics, but two studies published in 2026 dug deeper into how it may particularly support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin supports nucleus pulposus cells — the cushion-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural shock absorbers. (1) Researchers discovered that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammation pathway and improving a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in getting rid of worn-out components and operating more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a different view. (2) Using sophisticated genetic analysis, researchers identified that fibrosis — a kind of scarring — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a major part in disc degeneration. They discovered that quercetin demonstrates potential as an fibrosis-fighting agent, meaning it may help block this scarring process from advancing.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS
While additional research is needed before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings add to a growing body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can have a supportive role alongside conservative, non-surgical spine care like chiropractic treatment. At Aaron Chiropractic Clinic, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's own healing.
