Fort Wayne Chiropractic Nutrition Plan for Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis

August 20, 2019

Nutrition. Good nutrition is a good foundation for a healthy body. In our Fort Wayne chiropractic practice, we consult with patients who have conditions like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis that develop over time. Their potential prevention and treatment are foundationally rooted in early-life nutrition habits that are supported and/or enhanced throughout life. Aaron Chiropractic Clinic describes recent research on the importance of vitamins A, C and D as well as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for bones and joints and overall health.

HEALTHY CELLS, CARTILAGE, & BONE PREVENT DISEASES LIKE OSTEOPOROSIS & OSTEOARTHRITIS

Optimal nutrition status protects the body and keeps it strong and healthy. Research has shown the advantages of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate in slowing osteoarthritis of the knee. Researchers now plan to explore how nutrients, vitamins, antioxidants and other natural components in a normal diet may help. (1) Optimal bone and cartilage metabolism defends against issues like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) regulates bone and cartilage metabolism at the cellular level – even into the nucleus of the cell – of osteoblasts and chondrocytes. (2) The metabolism of articular cartilage depends on chondroprotectors (CPs) that influence the regeneration of cartilage surfaces and joint capsules. In osteoarthritis and low back pain, loss of chondroitin sulfate and hyaline cartilage is seen. Some methods to alleviate this situation included injections of CPs. (3) Other methods included oral supplementation as diet is not often a basis for these CPs. Oral supplementation is also a favored way to improve vitamin D levels as low levels of vitamin D are understood to be contributors  to conditions like osteoporosis, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, some cancer types, and overweight/obese status. Vitamin D is essential, but its natural sources like fatty fish and eggs are not typically part of most people’s day-to-day diets. In Spain, at least 50% of the population is deficient in vitamin D. Researchers recommended that Spain find a way to urge people to eat eggs to fight the vitamin D deficiency and ward off future diseases. (4) It’s especially important for those who have a combination of issues - osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency and high fracture/fall risk – to continue their supplementation of vitamin D. (5) Feeding yourself goes so far beyond just feeding your stomach and satisfying your taste buds! The food you eat and the supplements you take keep your body functioning, healthy and strong.
