Fort Wayne Mediterranean Diet Lowers Risk Of Cognitive Decline, Osteoporosis & Fracture Risk
At the mention of the Mediterranean, what comes to mind? Postcard-worthy images of gorgeous blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, clear blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Aaron Chiropractic Clinic presents nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the nutrition world for its many health benefits as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are good for all of us in our Fort Wayne chiropractic family!
BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET
With the growing recognition that diet plays a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being established. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to provide calcium and protein sufficient enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are linked to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been described as reducing hip fracture risk. Another new paper states that there is indication that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also reduce hip fracture risk in addition to risk of lumbar spine osteoporosis in females. (2) A study just published this past month pointed out that older adults who adhered the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had lower chances of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, reduced osteoporosis odds, lower risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be motivating to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Aaron Chiropractic Clinic finds these new studies quite interesting to share with our Fort Wayne chiropractic patients and their families.
WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?
Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It proposes avoiding sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not simple!
