You & Olympians: Have Pain, Find Relief, Return to Exercise Year-Round

December 29, 2020

Everyone needs to exercise. Everybody outght to move. Physical activity is for all of us. Is mountain climbing or marathon running required? Not at all! Walking is terrific. Muscle strengthening is superb. Gardening when the season is right is wonderful. No gyms are even necessary for the physical activity that will keep you feeling good. If a knee or back injury happens – and they happen to the best of us! – your Fort Wayne chiropractor at Aaron Chiropractic Clinic is ready to get you back to moving with gentle, safe spinal distraction manipulation…and knee distraction for the familiar matter of knee pain!

EXERCISE IN ANY WEATHER

A study done in Finland in 2017 followed the physical activity participation of 18-64 year olds and 65+ year-olds. Researchers discovered that the 18-64 year olds achieved the recommended guidelines for physical activity – 42% of men and 39% of women – better than the 65+ year olds – 26% men and 20% women. What were the most popular activities people did throughout the year? Cleaning/maintenance work, walking, and stair climbing. What exercises did they perform most consistently all year regardless of age/gender/season? Muscle-strengthening exercises and workout. Swimming, skiing, gardening, jogging, and stair climbing were more age/gender/season dependent. The researchers ultimately concluded that there are particular conditioning activities people will do. Suggestions for physical activity recommendations must use those to inspire the most physical activity possible. (1) What do you like to do? Aaron Chiropractic Clinic is confident our Fort Wayne chiropractic patients and their families can agree exercises to do any time of year! Heck, even in snow, a good snowball toss can inspire activity!

OLYMPIC EXERCISE

Winter and summer, Olympians move! They are very much like us though their training may be a bit more on the intense side. Elite athletes like the Olympians cope with pain and depression and keep going. A study of Olympians from the 1948 to 2018 games found that 32.4% report current pain, and 35.9% have functional limitations they connect to their Olympics’ days. Knee (20.6% lasting 120 days median) and lumbar spine (13.1% lasting 100 days) were the top two injuries Olympians suffered in their training days. Depression was reported by 6.6% of them.
